What materials are used for dressing wounds?

10/25/2026

Materials commonly used for wound dressing include bandages, sterile gauze, triangular bandages, povidone-iodine, and adhesive plasters.

1. Bandages: Bandages are a common medical supply, primarily categorised as self-adhesive elastic bandages and sports support bandages. Primarily used to bandage wounds or affected areas, they provide protection, immobilisation, and haemostasis. Bandages may be made from cotton cloth, gauze, or similar materials, offering elasticity to apply pressure for stopping bleeding.

2. Sterile Gauze: Sterile gauze is a common haemostatic material, characterised by excellent absorbency and breathability. It is mainly used to dress wounds, offering protection and haemostasis, and is suitable for various skin injuries.

3. Triangular bandage: Shaped as a triangle, this is an essential dressing item in first-aid kits. Simple and convenient to use, it has a wide range of applications including wound protection, haemostasis, and immobilisation. Beyond dressing, it can serve as a splint stabiliser, dressing material, or tourniquet substitute.

4. Povidone-iodine solution: This reddish-brown iodine-containing liquid is used for disinfecting and sterilising skin and mucous membranes. It causes minimal skin irritation, maintains local hygiene, and prevents wound infection. Avoid ingestion during use; consult a doctor promptly if discomfort occurs.

5. Plasters: Plasters are common first-aid supplies, primarily consisting of a gel-like middle layer and a protective film. Suitable for small, weeping wounds, they protect the injury and promote healing. Waterproof and moisture-resistant, plasters offer convenient application and remain a staple dressing material in daily life.

When dressing wounds, ensure all materials are clean and sterile, following guidance from a doctor or healthcare professional. Post-dressing, monitor the wound condition closely, change dressings promptly to prevent infection or tearing, and facilitate healing and recovery.
