Types of Nylon Cable Ties and the Application and Development Trends of Medical Cable Ties

10/25/2026

The cable tie was introduced in 1958 under the brand name ‘Ty-Rap’ by Thomas & Betts, an electrical engineering company. Its inventor was Maurus C. Logan, who had previously worked at Thomas & Betts. To date, Thomas & Betts has sold cable ties worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Nylon cable ties are injection-moulded from UL-certified nylon material, meeting the 94V-2 fire rating requirements. They also exhibit excellent resistance to acids, corrosion, and provide effective insulation. Resistant to ageing and offering high tensile strength, they operate within a temperature range of -20°C to +85°C. Variants compliant with the 94V-0 fire rating are available, alongside low-temperature (-40°C) and high-temperature (+150°C) resistant products.

Nylon cable ties are primarily categorised by functional structure into nine common types: self-locking, live-loop, label-type, tamper-proof, fixed-head, pin-type, bead-hole, fishbone, and weather-resistant. Each type exhibits distinct characteristics in locking mechanisms, reusability, and specialised functions. Below is a comparison of key types and their core features:

Type    Core Features    Primary Applications

Self-locking Cable Ties

Unidirectional locking mechanism; tightens progressively when pulled; single-use, non-removable    Electrical circuit fixing, pipe bundling, general bundling (most common)

Slip-through Cable Ties

Adjustable tightness; reusable; features a release button or mechanism at the head    Temporary fixings requiring repeated adjustments, equipment maintenance, testing scenarios

Label-type Cable Ties

Designated marking area on head or body for writing or label attachment    Cable identification, equipment numbering, classification management (industrial cabling)

Tamper-evident Cable Ties (Seals)

Single-use, destruction upon removal, tamper-proof functionality    Sealing metering equipment, securing cargo boxes, security protection

Fixed-head cable ties

Features fixed holes or snap-lock mechanisms at the head, requiring use with fixed anchor points    Wall mounting, equipment installation, scenarios requiring anchor points

Pin-style cable ties (aircraft head)

Features a pin mechanism at the head for rapid insertion into holes    Automotive wiring harnesses, mechanical assembly, rapid installation scenarios

Beaded hole cable ties

Features evenly spaced holes for adjustable length, similar to a belt buckle    Binding requiring precise length adjustment, securing irregularly shaped objects

Fishbone cable ties

Features fishbone-patterned ridges on the strap for enhanced friction and slip resistance    Binding on smooth surfaces, oily environments, high tensile strength requirements

Weather-Resistant Cable Ties

Incorporate UV-resistant and anti-ageing compounds for extended outdoor durability    Suitable for outdoor engineering, photovoltaic installations, and prolonged exposure environments

Beyond these functional classifications, nylon cable ties may also be categorised by material (standard nylon 66, high/low-temperature modified grades), dimensions (widths ranging from 2.5mm to 30mm), colour (white, black, multicoloured), and intended application. Practical selection requires comprehensive consideration of the dimensions of the object to be secured, tensile force requirements, usage environment (temperature, humidity, outdoor/indoor), and whether reusability is necessary.

Medical ties play a vital role in modern healthcare, with their applications evolving from traditional fixation towards intelligent and personalised solutions. The table below provides a quick overview of the primary application areas and core development trends for medical ties.

Dimension    Core Points    Specific Description

Primary Application Areas

Trauma Management and Postoperative Immobilisation    Used to secure fractured areas, stabilise joints, control bleeding, protect surgical incisions, and secure drainage tubes.

Chronic Wound Care    Provides protection and promotes healing for chronic wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers and varicose ulcers.

Sports Protection and Everyday First Aid    Used for temporary immobilisation of sprained joints, preventing sports injuries, and treating minor household abrasions.

Medical Device Cable and Tubing Organisation    Anti-static, sterilisation-resistant specialised ties for securing monitor cables and organising/securing infusion lines and gas tubes.

Core Development Trends

Intelligent Solutions    Integrated sensors enable real-time monitoring of wound healing, body temperature and other physiological parameters for personalised care.

Material Science Innovation    Utilising nano-silver (antimicrobial), biocompatible materials, and biodegradable substances to enhance functionality and environmental sustainability.

Personalisation and Precision    Employing 3D printing technology to customise ties conforming to patient anatomy, improving comfort and therapeutic efficacy.

Product Structural Optimisation    Emergence of reusable tie designs with adjustable tension for enhanced user convenience.

Several critical points warrant attention during selection and application:

Follow professional guidance: Medical straps must be chosen and applied strictly under healthcare professionals' supervision. Improper use may cause impaired circulation, skin pressure, or inadequate fixation.

Monitor reactions closely: Observe the bandaged area during use. Promptly seek attention if symptoms such as numbness, tingling, abnormal skin discolouration, or worsening swelling occur.
